If your child is travelling with you

With your ticket you can take up to 4 children with you for free.
- For every paying passenger (aged 12 and over), 4 children under 12 travel free of charge (for more than 4, get a Children’s ticket)
- No ticket needed, your ticket is valid for the children
- In both travel classes
- No restrictions on timetable or destination
Attention:
- This discount for kids cannot be used instead of our Group Tariffs.
- You have to be able to prove the age of the child by means of an identity card (or another official document)
If your child is travelling alone
- With a Large Families card, travel is free and no ticket is needed for 2nd class travel
- Otherwise, travel is available at half price with a Children’s ticket

Conditions
Kids aged 2-11 travel at 50% off in Economy class (not applicable in Business and Prestige classes)
Kids aged 2-11 travel at 25% off in other classes (not applicable in Business and Prestige classes) including Sleeper class if the child occupies their own bed.
Can a child travel alone on the train?
Yes, children between the ages of 8 and 11 can travel alone, but only under certain conditions:
- The child can travel only in Economy or Business class.
- Travel only on direct trains (no connections or transfers), except if an adult can meet the child at the transfer point.
- The child must not leave before 5:25 a.m., and trains must arrive before midnight on the same day.
- An unaccompanied child cannot board or disembark at an unstaffed station.
- The child does not have any life-threatening food allergies, such as an allergy to peanuts or peanuts products.
Note that if the train on which the child is travelling crosses the American border, please obtain information from Amtrak, the railway company for passenger travel in the United States, as well as from the US Customs and Canada Customs.
Do I have to buy a ticket for my infant?
Babies and infants under 24 months of age travel free provided that they do not occupy a seat. Only one baby travelling free per adult. If this is your case, please advise VIA once your booking is completed,

Abruzzo: free under one metre in height, accompanied by an adult and not occupying a seat.
Bolzano: free under 6 years and children residing in the province of BZ who have reached the age of 6 but are not yet attending compulsory school, always accompanied by a paying adult and not occupying a seat.
Campania: free under 6 years of age accompanied by a paying adult and not occupying a seat.
Lombardia: free up to 4 years not yet reached, accompanied by an adult and not occupying a seat; 50% discount: from 4 to 14 years not yet reached; full price over 14 years.
Puglia: Children up to the age of 10 travel free of charge if they are accompanied by an adult with a regular ticket; from the age of ten, no free tickets or reductions on the grounds of age are offered.
Sardinia: free under 6 years, if accompanied by an adult with a valid travel ticket, (subject to possession of proof of age in cases of dubious evidence); in this case, the person accompanying more than one child under 6 years must purchase a travel ticket at the appropriate full fare for every two (e.g. one child is free, two children – one full fare ticket, three children – one full fare ticket, four children – two full fare tickets, etc.).
Trento: free under 6 years accompanied by a paying adult (or holder of free tickets and passes for free movement) and with right to a seat, up to a maximum of 5 children under 6 years for each accompanying adult.
SPECIAL FARES
Lazio-Fiumicino Airport fare 1/Ter : children up to four years not yet reached travel free, provided they are accompanied by an adult with a valid travel ticket; children between 4 and 12 years not yet reached travel free if accompanied by an adult with a valid travel ticket; in this case, one child for each paying adult can travel free.
Fare 14 for urban/metropolitan areas : in the cities of Bari, Rome, Venice, Palermo and Turin, where Fare 14 for urban areas is in force, the reduction for children does not apply.
