Glacier Express

The best, most interesting and relaxing way to explore Switzerland is by train, tram, bus and boat. Switzerland has the most widely used, reliable and fixed public transport system in the world. It is recommended that you use the Swiss public transport system because it is fast and reliable. Swiss trains and trams are powered by clean hydroelectric power. Thanks to the seamless rails, the Swiss train travels very smoothly.

The Swiss Federal Railways logo includes SBB CFF FFS – 9 letters that can be found throughout the country. This is an abbreviation, meaning the three main official languages of the Swiss Federal Railways: German, French and Italian. Every three letters is an abbreviation of a language.

Swiss people like their trains. The average person travels more than 2,300 kilometers per year. Nearly one-seventh of the Swiss population. Every day, 1.2 million people use trains. The Swiss railway network is the most densely used system in the world. More than 10,000 trains run every day on a 3,100-kilometer network, and as many as 1,000 trains are in operation at any time. The transportation system is equipped with more than 1,000 kilometers of mountain railways, more than 13,500 kilometers of bus lines and more than 23,000 bus stops.

Swiss Railway Clock at Zurich Station

Excellent Swiss traffic is easy to spoil you – fast, on-time to disturbing trains, clean buses and six different types of mountain transport systems and integrate them into a coherent system. The Swiss Railway Clock (German: Schweizer Bahnhofsuhr), the clock used by the Swiss Federal Railways at various stations, was designed by Swiss engineer Hans Hill Fick, who was employed by the Swiss Federal Railways, in 1944 with watchmaker Mobatime. In 1953, inspired by the shape of the railway disc signal, Hilferk added a red second hand on the existing clock face. The Swiss railway clock has become one of Switzerland’s national symbols. London’s Design Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York have listed it as an outstanding design of the twentieth century. The Swiss Classical Design Series also includes the Swiss Railway clock. This clock face was designed in 2012 to be licensed to Apple for its iOS products.

This clock is designed to meet the needs of railway use. The time displayed by different clocks must be coordinated, and passengers and railway staff in the station can know the accurate and reliable time. In addition, the seconds are not listed on the railway schedule, and all trains depart at the hour of the minute. To this end, all Swiss Federal Railway Station clocks coordinate the synchronization time by receiving radio waves from a master clock. At every hour of the hour, the master clock emits an electronic pulse, and its minute clock advances one cell after receiving the signal. The second hand is independently driven by an electric motor, and there is no linkage between the hour and minute hands. The second hand takes about 58.5 seconds to circle the clock face, then stays at the 12 o’clock position until the clock receives the signal from each minute before starting the next round. According to Hilferk, the design of the second hand’s short stop can help the train run on time, and other railway companies have followed suit.

Swiss train ticket discount options range from half-price cards to multi-day, multi-purpose buses, boats, trains and even bicycle rental tickets. Generally speaking, there is at least one train or bus per hour on each route, every 30 minutes or even 15 minutes on many routes and buses, and every 5-7 minutes during peak hours, but with Like all routes in Switzerland, there will be a slight decrease in the number of trips on weekends, especially on Sundays and public holidays in less populated areas.

Railway Operators

Switzerland has the Swiss Federal Railway: SBB CFF FFS. But the federal railway does not cover all regions. In addition to the federal railway company SBB, there are other railway companies. There are many railway companies in Switzerland.

For travelers, it doesn’t matter which company service route you know. All companies work together to form the Swiss railway network. On most routes, only one company is operating a train. So there is no real choice. You only need to go to the company that just serves the route. There are no price differences between routes offered by multiple operators. Tickets are purchased for the route and apply to any train. Rail passes apply to the entire country or region and apply to all trains on the included routes.

Tarifzonen, Fare Zone

Tarifzonen, Fare Zone

Swiss buses and trains are not legally allowed to compete with each other. Instead, they complement each other – except for the coordination schedule. In this way, almost all inhabited Swiss villages and towns can be reached by public transport.

There are about 20 regional fare networks across the country that combine multiple public transports (urban buses, trams, subways, any type of train, postal administration, ships, cable cars, etc.) from many different providers around the city centre. Fare systems, such as ZVV in Zurich, or unireso in the Canton of Geneva and its neighboring France (see also: tpg in Geneva), or mobilis, Lucerne, Nieder and Oberwalden around Lausanne, North Shore of Lake Geneva State’s passepartout (keyword: Titlis, Titlis). Typically, these networks sell area-based passes (rather than point-to-point tickets) that are valid for a specific time frame for journeys within the fare network.

Even without trains or city public transportation, the comprehensive PostAuto/CarPostale/AutoPostale network can help you. PostBus Switzerland is part of the regional fare network, if applicable.

SBB’s new Bombardier long-distance double-decker train

Beginning on December 9, 2018, the Swiss Railways SBB introduced a new long-distance train made by Bombardier with up to 1,300 seats, thus providing greater traffic on very busy routes. The pressure-resistant compartment design reduces the uncomfortable feeling of pressure in the ear when passing through a tunnel or passing a train traveling at a high speed in the opposite direction.
The new trains also use technology to enable them to bypass corners faster in the future, which will also shorten travel time. The latest generation of energy-efficient engines ensures that multiple units can accelerate quickly, but are relatively economical.

Ticket

Swiss public transport fares will change for two years or longer, and may even change for ten years. This is not surprising, as changes in fares can easily become a political issue for extensive discussion and are often voted by the public. Therefore, Swiss people usually buy tickets a few minutes before departure if they do not have children or travel cards (many do do) or do not buy online for convenience. So you can also buy the reason for the point-to-point ticket in Switzerland 30 days before departure.

There is only one exception: limited time special tickets are only sold online and are only valid for certain connections and are only available online 30 days prior to the travel date.

Ticket Valid Period

Standard domestic train tickets are usually valid for the entire calendar day until the end of the day (starting at 5 am the next day), but only for one trip of the selected route! And, usually, you can make an intermediate stop and continue later on the same day.

Tickets for route sales within the boundaries of the ticket network are typically based on zones rather than point-to-point tickets and are therefore valid for any route retained within the designated area and are valid for a specific time frame and are generally applicable to any number of journeys in that segment Time (for example, 1/2 hour, 1 hour, 2 hours, or the entire calendar day, or even 24 hours) of a one-way ticket. Different fare networks may have different terms, although they are usually very similar or sometimes even the same.

In general, standard domestic train tickets are always available for any type of train, which also includes tourist trains (which may need to be booked) and international trains, as long as they take the same route as shown on your ticket and you Travel only between Swiss train stations.

International papers crossing cross-border trains on the Swiss border usually have completely different effectiveness and are usually limited to specific trains and/or train types. But in the Swiss railway system, they usually have at least the same effectiveness as domestic airfare and are often effective even for more than one day. But please check their details carefully.
